How Do I Upload a File From Someone Elses Computer Into My Spider Oak
As I wrote before, I have been using the SpiderOak One Backup service for a while now. It costs more than the usage of Duplicity with Backblaze B2, but it promises to work meliorate. As well it creates backups continiously, so I don't have to look for the full 60 minutes to have a backup. Using inotify it will automatically put files into the queue just as I save them. I actually similar this. My laptop could burst in flames and I would just lose a few minutes of work.
But the performance of the organisation is bad, again and over again. I call up that I tried the service a few years ago and had just exactly the same issues with it. Often information technology would not utilize my upload bandwith (10 Mbit/s) fully but rather utilise one full CPU core, which seems excessive. I would restart the application and so information technology would stop this. Often this is triggered by using the GUI. I have the feeling that the GUI cannot actually cope with 10 g of files beingness listed, and then it just freezes up as it tries to display it all.
Lately even restarting did not help. And so I wrote to the back up on 2020-05-23 most this issue. I got a reply telling me to move the ~/.config/SpiderOakONE
directory somewhere else and sign back into the programme. Then it would practise the syndication once again and it should work fine. At the time information technology seemed to work fine once more after a few unproblematic restarts, and so I did not follow through on this at that time.
Then final week I had the issue once more, it would just not upload anything. I asked the support on Twitter and they said that they had some issues with the servers, simply it should exist skilful again. On Mon I experienced troubles again, information technology would just not upload. And then I chose the option to delete the upload queue in the program. After a restart of the software I saw the syndication screen.
This process took some time, and that is fine. It somewhen got that it had to upload a agglomeration of files that where changed since the final fill-in. The progess was still super poor, and would only hog the CPU merely not practise any actual uploading. And so I tried the communication from the support and deleted the ~/.config/SpiderOakONE
directory. After a restart I had the aforementioned syndication process, and then obviously I had already done that using the built-in functionality.
After that went through, upload progress was super tedious over again. On the left you can see the queue of files that are to exist uploaded. The program packs a few of them into an archive and sends that in one go. On the right you lot can see the four virtual CPU cores, on the bottom there is the network usage. There is a brusque break in the CPU load, then it uploads something for a few seconds and then stalls once again, using the CPU. This pattern repeats itself again and again. Trying to quit the program will leave a CPU bound background process which does not react to the term betoken. I have to send the impale indicate to get rid of it.
I take watched this for a few hours, and y'all can see the time of twenty-four hour period, remaining files to upload and remaining size to upload in the following table. One can see that some files did become uploaded, but changes to files are piling up faster than the software makes to trickle to the servers.
Fourth dimension | Files | MB |
---|---|---|
10:25 | 2167 | 263 |
10:28 | 2166 | 288 |
10:32 | 2166 | 288 |
10:51 | 2011 | 241 |
11:36 | 2221 | 316 |
12:03 | 2013 | 519 |
This cannot be blamed on my overall connection either. Every bit you can see below in the readout from my modem, the upload is nowhere well-nigh saturated, and almost of it comes from a video conference I was attention via my mobile phone.
At this rate the backup service is useless to me. I want a timely fill-in of my data, and I don't desire to have a whole CPU cadre blocked from the software.
On 2020-07-28 I have again contacted the back up team and pointed them to a draft version of this web log post. They accept replied proverb that they don't see whatever other option than to delete all information and to register my laptop as a new device, deleting all old data on the server to free the quota.
This feels like a concluding-resort thing, and the support does not actually seem to dig into the problem. At that place should be options to look at log files, view telemetry or something similar that. They could shop this on the device locally, this would not be a privacy event. Just deleting everything, reinstalling does non seem similar an intelligent measure out, rather brute forcefulness.
I have all the same washed it, I was brusk of canceling the service anyway. When I logged into the awarding again and registered my laptop under a new name, it would still download all the meta information from the quondam device. I accept no idea what the point of this was, but information technology nevertheless took lots of fourth dimension and CPU ability.
After it has set itself up again, at that place were no files selected to be backed upwards. This is great, every bit the software should so have aught to practice. I first tasked information technology to delete my sometime files such that I would not have to download the meta information for them once again. This took ages and likewise tons of CPU power, without any real usage of the network. I was non surprised at this betoken.
Then the old devices was removed, only the CPU utilization was withal up. I have tried to close the application, only no avail. And and so I killed information technology and all the other processes that it had spawned. During restart it would just not come back upward, but yet use a full CPU core.
I take then once more deleted the ~/.config/SpiderOakONE
directory in the hope that my old 91 GB of backups would have disappeared. I started the application once more than, registered my laptop as a new device: mu-x220-3
. It seemed to download a whole lot of data again, but it should take been all deleted!
Later a while information technology was up once more, still it consumed a whole lot of CPU power for doing virtually zero. I did non have whatsoever backup files selected for the new contour, however it was searching for files to back up.
At this signal I was rather unhappy about the whole situation and was very close to canceling the service.
Uploading again … for a while
Then to my surprise the load started to go down once more, back to a few pct. I selected the files I want to take backed upwardly in order to requite it some other chance. It started to index these files and used a lot of CPU, only that was fine. And so it started to upload with full speed and using only some CPU resources.
A mean solar day later information technology is however uploading stuff, merely already using more than power and having less upload speed saturation. It is using around eighty % of a CPU cadre just to upload with less than 1 MB/due south, which I find very frustrating. Perhaps the CPU load comes from compressing the files it uploads, that might explicate the load; still it feels way besides much for that.
Apparently I got excited also quickly. The upload has stalled. The CPU load that 1 tin see the in the following moving-picture show comes from other tasks, SpiderOak One does not use more than than a few percentage. The upload is virtually nonexistant.
Perchance the software does not cope so well with suspending the laptop? Peradventure it gets stuck when the upload is interrupted in this mode?
I have contacted support again, just it feels as they don't actually have a clue about what is going on either. So I will likely meet how information technology behaves and and so just cancel the subscription.
Merely for fun I take restarted the application again. Afterward a while information technology has constitute all the new files and is at present uploading again. The CPU usage is downwardly again. It seems really eratic.
Bulk uploading finished
Over the past days the application has finished uploading all the bulk of my data. Now there are just incremental updates and in that location have non been whatsoever CPU load surges that I had before. I really promise that it stays this fashion and I can continue to use this service!
